Lion Ride 2023

Stowmarket Lions held their annual Lion Ride in aid of Marie Curie on the 11th June.  The location at Elmswell Blackbourne Centre is ideal as there are routes out and around the beautiful Suffolk countryside.

It was quite a warm day, with the sun shining and temperatures starting to rise at 8:30 when the first rider left.  Signs were checked starting at 4:00am.  Stowmarket Lion were out in force helping setup the hall and manning marshalling points throughout routes.  The first rider left at 8:30am.  There were also feeding stations, so riders had access to water and bananas at three points around the course.  There are a lot of volunteers that help to make this work, and I would like to thank all of them. The staff at the centre helped a great deal too.

Representatives of Marie Curie attended so that they could raise the profile of this excellent cause and to answer any questions.   Stowmarket Lions has supported the Marie Curie charity for a number of years, and we have been able to raise over £2,000 with the Lion Ride 2023.

At the end of the Lion Ride, each rider was checked back in and presented with a medal.  Some of the riders also chose to have their picture taken as proof of their participation.  These were sent to the individual riders during the following week.

Feed back from the riders was excellent., this is an example of what they said.

  • Hi, thanks for organising the ride and the photo. We felt the route , 50k, was excellent, lots of rural roads and villages. The signage was very good  and we didn’t miss any turnings. Lots of friendly marshals at some of the turns too . Refreshment stops both worked well with water and bananas available. We hope to do the ride again in 2024.
  • The ride was good and enjoyable, and no aspect could be criticised

Please put the date 9th June 2024 in your diary for next year.
